Belmont
is an attractive small town about 10 minutes drive from Combret and has
a small supermarket, visiting butcher, baker, post office, bank (open
Tuesday all day Thursday p.m.) outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and
horse riding. Go-carting and gliding are at the aerodrome.
The Belmont auberge is friendly with simple inexpensive food.
St. Sernin is also about ten minutes away, has a slightly larger
supermarket, a butcher, a baker, two banks, one with a hole in the wall,
other shops and two hotels - Carayon and Hotel du Fort - both with good
restaurants.
There are two open-air swimming pools.
St. Affrique is the nearest sizeable town (25 mins to the east)
and has many shops, banks, night club, cinema and a market on Saturday
morning.
The market is in two parts ñ donít miss the food market.
Leave early as markets and shops close at 12.15 p.m. when the restaurants
are eager for your custom.
Albi, 50 minutes by car to the west, is a very interesting medieval
city built largely in mellow red brick with a very fine fortified cathedral.
On the south bank of the Tarn, next to the oldest bridge in France, is
the Toulouse-Lautrec museum which houses the worlds largest collection
of the painting by this famous artist who was born near by. The formal
gardens of the museum and the view of the river from them are well worth
a visit.
The shops are very smart and the city also has cinemas and an Opera House.
On the road into Albi you will find a Geant hypermarket which sells virtually
everything including excellent fresh fish, meat, cheeses, vegetables and
prepared foods.
Within a short distance of Combret it is possible to eat out at excellent
restaurants, many of which are very inexpensive. A few you might
like to try are :
Hotel Carayon of St. Sernin is reasonable and gastronomic. Pierre and
Coco Carayon are the third generation of family proprietors.
Hotel du Fort - St Sernin - Charming, friendly French hostelerie, very
inexpensive and very good country food.
Hotel Normand in Montlau , small and simple.

the highest villages in the area with superb views.
