With ten sites that carry the title "Most Beautiful French Villages", Aveyron heads the national honours list. Only 152 rural towns are recognised by the national association "Most Beautiful French Villages", created in 1992.
It is true that the Association has defined a very strict schedule of conditions.
Aside from the forty-odd criteria established in the charter, each village must possess two monuments or classified sites.
