> A Short History of Aveyron
The Second World War

The motto of Marshal Petain "work, family and country" and its retinue of demagogic dictums "The soil does not deceive!" clearly failed to score well in this catholic soil of Aveyron. Conservative by culture, Aveyron which supported the stubborn priests who protested against the laws and teachings of secularism could not be doing with the talk of Marshal Petain.
The invasion of the southern region and the barbarism of the Nazis encouraged many into the arms of the Resistance. Underground movements multiplied and as elsewhere after the D-Day landings they worked to obstruct the occupiers. When the Germans left Rodez the Gestapo murdered more than 30 prisoners at Sainte-Radegonde near the city. A memorial has been erected in their honour.
