Short History of Aveyron
The
Industrial Revolution of the Aveyronnaise
All Aveyronnaise were not farmers. Some, proletarians in the Marxist
sense of the word, also suffered from the injustices of the industrial
revolution of the 19th century. Consequently the workers of the industrial
coalfields of Decazeville did not escape hardship.
One
of the worst strikes took place in these mines. It lasted 108 days
and was noted by the dramatic rejection by the strikers of the engineer
Watrin.
The
industrial development of Decazeville started when the Duke of Decaze
, former minister of Louis XVIII, discovered the presence of iron
ore and coal.
