Like
all the other Departments of France, Aveyron supplied it's fair
share of young men to the great butcher's shop called the First
World War.
The
arrival of the Mayor at a house meant bad news, a husband, son
or brother had died in the killing fields of the north.
The young men of Aveyron who only spoke their Aveyronnaise dialect
soon learned to speak French in the trenches from their unfortunate
companions from other Departments. They discovered the spirit
and customs of different cultures.
The War Memorials erected at this time support the absurdity of
the conflict. With 15,000 dead, Rouergue found it difficult to
cope with the heavy loss.
